A BIG step in a cubic millimeter

Happy Monday everyone!

Since we are dealing with Innovation and Research in Education, our interests are narrowly related to the use of new technologies, or ICT, as you may prefer. That is the reason we must keep up to date to any piece of news on it. The following link will lead you to an article published by a blog of El Mundo newspaper in which we are told about a cubic-millimeter pc developed by Michigan University.

http://www.elmundo.es/blogs/elmundo/el-gadgetoblog/2011/02/28/un-ordenador-en-un-milimetro-cubico.html

Big steps are being made every day by researchers within the field of information and communication technology. How far will technology bring us?

We hope you like reading and thinking about it.

AcTiOn ReSeArCh

Hi you all!

We wanted to share this video we made ourselves. It has just a few images on Action Research and the steps to carry it out. We hope you like it!

Nice weekend :)

INTERNET CENSORSHIP!

Good morning, everyone!

Today, while reading news online, we surprisingly found the following headline: Un mapa del mundo presenta el estado de la censura de Internet (http://www.antena3.com/noticias/tecnologia/mapa-mundo-presenta-estado-censura-internet_2011021700109.html you can read the whole news following the link).

This is the map showing the levels of censorship, quite astonishing because of the service we get everyday from Internet, isn't it?

Just in case it is not clearly appreciated, these are the meanings of the different colours:

 Blue: no censorship.
Yellow: some censorship.
Red: under surveillances.
Black: pervasive censorhip.

1. How much important is Internet in our lives?

2. Do you use Internet everyday?

3. What does Internet offer you?

4. No Internet= chaos?

These are some open-answer questions we leave here for all of us to think on the role(s) Internet plays in our daily lives.

Have a nice weekend!

I teach, therefore you learn... or do you??

Hi everyone,
Here you will find a video exploring the changing expectations of our students. It will make you think a bit after seeing it. Enjoy!

Is the role of a teacher relevant?

Hi, everyone!

Today we have this funny picture in which we appreciate the willingness of teachers to try new things in order "improve" their classes. In addition, in the big island we see three main blocks: just pay attention to the yellow one where there are just three teachers.

In a sarcastic way, we just wanted to share this with you all as a kind of value or moral: just like the island which is still unexplored, most teachers in Spain should bet for being more innovative withing the teaching-learning field and feel free to try and discover new methodologies.

Comments are welcome!

Innovation in Valencian Schools

Here we are going to briefly analyze the way we could introduce some innovative techniques of learning in schools of the Region of Valencia. Specifically, we are going to focus on the incorporation of new technologies in schools: computers, digital blackboards…
The first aspect we immediately thought of is money: “Money makes the world go around”, says Liza Minnelli’s song.

However, there are other aspects deserving greater attention and investment:
a)      Formation of qualified teachers.
b)     Suitable materials which both teachers and students can make use of (above mentioned: computers, digital blackboards, creation of blogs, electronic portfolios…)
c)      Teachers willing to cooperate and headmasters to improve the quality of education. As we already debated in class, not everyone would agree with innovative principles, such as the ones we propose regarding English Language:

1. English lessons should be fully given in English since first of ESO. It is the only way they would get to understand the language; getting completely immersed in it and exposed to it, receiving input and producing output.

2. Motivation from students should be promoted by organizing abroad trips.

3. Teachers should introduce new ways of teaching, for example: performing a lesson in the computers room (at least once a month).  Consequently, students are taught in different and innovative ways:  prezi, cuadernia, blogs, forums, electronic portfolios, online exercises from BBC…

In order to conclude this entry, we would like to post an open question for all of us to think about it seriously:
Is it that there is a lack of money, investment in education, or is it that we do not know how to make a profit of economical resources?

Feel free to add your opinions about it! Thank you!

Crisis and education!

Hi, everyone!

Today we have been looking for some news on education. We found the following article in El País. Even though it tells us about English Universities, it affects Spanish Education as well if we think of Erasmus Programmes, to mention an instance.

This is the link to the web on El País newspaper:

Introspection as a language learner

As you may suppose our experience with language learning has been good because we have studied to become teachers of English. However, we still have the feeling that we could know a lot more than we do, as there are many years of study behind us. That is the reason why as future teachers we should improve the quality of our lessons, speaking from our experiences. Our level of English has increased and exploded thanks to the years we have been at university, as we were totally immersed in the target language.

The strenghts of the teachers we had were the great capacity to catch our attention and got us absorbed in the atmosphere they created. It was a way to transport us to another world, we forgot for a moment we were in the classroom. Another strenght would be allowing the students to take part and control of the lesson, being participative, talkative...

On the other hand, the weaknesses of our teachers have affected our learning process because many times if you do not like his/her way of teaching, you end up not liking the subject itself. That is a real pity, since in the end there is a lack of knowledge. Listing some of those weaknesses, they would be: some teachers come into a classroom, start talking and they do not change their pitch during the whole lesson. This makes the lesson very monotonous and boring, it is very easy to disconnect.
Another important feature is that some times a teacher has not prepared a lesson enough and often gets lost in the middle of the lesson. This is something the students immediately perceive, so this fact lowers the attention of the students.
The same problem would be if a teacher was asked something and did not know how to answer. This gives a bad impression of him/her as a teacher and his/her knowledge.

Summing up, we have been students for many years and we already know which are the strenghts and weaknesses we will have to face and how to avoid or make use of them.

What is behind innovation?

As you already know, innovation embraces a huge amount of variables to deal with. Here we share some of them:

1. Concept. We need to know more about new terms in whatever field we are working with.

2. Future. Innovation -in any aspect we may apply it- writes a future.

3. Inspiration. Certain creativity might be expected from a product we create (a vid., a project, an essay, a blog...).

4. Technology. It goes hand by hand with point 2 because it is on our agenda every single day: we buy on the Internet; we keep in e-touch with people (Skype, Messenger, Facebook, Tuenti, Twitter…); we send e-mails; we arrange dates, flights, legal documents online and etcetera.

BREAKING NEWS

Experience as Master students

We would like to share with you our experience as Master students in Valencia. Our speciality in this Master is English language. We are supposed to be trained to become good teachers of English but as this is the second year that the Master has been implemented, everything is still a bit chaotic. Therefore, our training is not as good as expected. However, we must say that we are being better prepared than our previous generations.

Our first impression as we started the Master was very possitive as we were eager to learn. We wanted to know everything about the "teaching world" such as how to become teachers, how to prepare our lessons, how to encourage our students
to learn English, how to face daily problems inside the classroom... etc. Nevertheless, this was not the reality of everyday's lectures. It is true that some contents are useful but many others are not.

In fact, during our first period of "Practicum" we have realized that the content of many subjects is not really applicable to classroom context. Students' needs go beyond all those abstract theories that we have been taught. No matter how well prepared your lesson is, you have to be prepared for spontaneity and some hitches that may arise in your class. That is why we should be persons with initiative, motivators and know many strategies to cope with all those problems.

In short, we believe that the "Practicum" period should be longer as it is a unique opportunity, very fruitful for our training, where you are immerse in the classroom environment with the help of an experienced teacher. So we should take advantage of that as in the near future we will have to face that situation on our own and we need to be well prepared.

As the proverb says "practice makes perfect".

Innovate to integrate!

We were looking for some info this morning about innovation on the net. Surprisingly, we found the following:

"El Govern crea una web para la integración de los inmigrantes disponible en 10 lenguas".

It was published in 20minutos.com about two years ago. Nonetheless, it is still of our interest because we can notice how innovation and technology are not only used within the educational context but also the sociological framework. Let us ask ourselves this question: why is this piece of news important for us as researchers?
Simply because it shows the vast fields of investigation we can cover. In addition, it is one more example of how the different regions in our country invest their money. On the one hand , there are some which invest in tourism, infrastructures but others prefer to bet for social education and helping their immigrants getting integrated. In order to illustrate this case, the government of Catalonia has decided to create a website in which citizens can read information about Catalonia in 10 different languages: Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Romanian, Hindi, Russian and Tamazight (spoken in Morocco).

The link to the multilingual website is the following:
