We would like to share with you our experience as Master students in Valencia. Our speciality in this Master is English language. We are supposed to be trained to become good teachers of English but as this is the second year that the Master has been implemented, everything is still a bit chaotic. Therefore, our training is not as good as expected. However, we must say that we are being better prepared than our previous generations.
Our first impression as we started the Master was very possitive as we were eager to learn. We wanted to know everything about the "teaching world" such as how to become teachers, how to prepare our lessons, how to encourage our students
to learn English, how to face daily problems inside the classroom... etc. Nevertheless, this was not the reality of everyday's lectures. It is true that some contents are useful but many others are not.
In fact, during our first period of "Practicum" we have realized that the content of many subjects is not really applicable to classroom context. Students' needs go beyond all those abstract theories that we have been taught. No matter how well prepared your lesson is, you have to be prepared for spontaneity and some hitches that may arise in your class. That is why we should be persons with initiative, motivators and know many strategies to cope with all those problems.
In short, we believe that the "Practicum" period should be longer as it is a unique opportunity, very fruitful for our training, where you are immerse in the classroom environment with the help of an experienced teacher. So we should take advantage of that as in the near future we will have to face that situation on our own and we need to be well prepared.
As the proverb says "practice makes perfect".
